I’ve built my own DVR using the excellent Linux-based MythTV software. I’ve written a detailed guide about how I did it here.

I mostly wrote it for my own benefit, but hopefully it will be of use to others too. If you’re into this kind of thing, please do take a look and let me know what you think in the comments secion.

This was a very fun project for me and in the end it turned out better than I expected, if anything. There is also plenty of potential for future expansion. My next step is probably getting a proper router so I can control the system via the remote web-based interface.

The producers of this three-part CNN documentary currently airing in the US bought the above photo of mine for use in the “Jewish Warriors” part which was on last night. I took the photo in Hebron back in 2005. You can read one of my reports from Hebron here. I wrote it back during the January 2005 Palestinian presidential elections. The documentary itself is not bad. It has certain problems, not least of which is the typical inclination to portray Israeli violence as by definition a response to Palestinian violence, when the reverse has historically been the case. I may do an AH commentary on it soon. The whole thing is on YouTube, first part here. The other ten parts are linked to from that part. My picture is wards the end (it’s a detail of the Kach logo graffiti). Also look out for my name in the credits at the end of the last part.

UPDATE: The excellent American Hummus video blog reposted this clip. It’s a good job too, since the CNN version seems to no longer be available.

A TV crew from CNN International recently visited our office. Most stuff about this country I’ve seen on seen on CNN international has been unbelievably pro-Israel. But this report is brilliant! Not least because I wrote the headline of the edition that that draw attention to in the paper: Tony Blair: ‘East Jerusalem is occupied territory.’

They visit West Jerusalem and ask Israelis what they think about the paper, newly available in Israel. Although one guy is nice, most of them hurl off-camera insults such as “who would pay to read what Arabs think” and “the Palestinians can take their papers and go to Jordan.”

Lovely.

One says on camera: “I’m not sure if I’m 100% comfortable with this idea of a Palestinian paper in Jerusalem.” Note that none of them express reservations, or even interest, over any of the actual content of the paper, merely the idea of a Palestinian paper.

Israeli newspapers such as Ha’aretz and the right-wing Jerusalem Post have been daily sold in Palestinian cities such as Ramallah for years.

To view the video, either click on this direct link, or go to www.cnn.com/video , click “search video” and search for “Palestine Times.”
